Ma:Moment was a commissioned play, directed by Low Kee Hong of Singapore’s Theatreworks drama company. The work re-imagined the lives of Cantonese “ah mas” (domestic workers) who had lived their last days in the infamous “death houses” of Sago Lane, in Chinatown. These were a form of informal “homes” for older women (and some men) who had no family in Singapore, and waited to die in the rooms above the funeral parlors of the area. This part of the national landscape was considered to be highly polluted by association with death, and was razed in the 1960s. Ma:Moment was staged in public, on the site of the former death houses, in an original set designed by Lekker.
